provoked

…unto good works.

As I said, the kids decided to pick all the ripe tomatoes before pulling up the plants on Saturday.  They knew I wanted to be done dealing with tomatoes, so they promised that they would do the work.  “You can show us how to can, then go to bed!”  Riiiiight.  ;-)

As you can see, they did do most of the work.  Wash, core, through the food processor, and into a couple pots on the stove {plus another 4qts of puree in a bucket to cook down later}.

The Cowgirl had determined it would be wise to make pizza sauce so we wouldn’t have to buy sauce at the store for a long time {She’s been studying stewardship for math… and since pizza is her favorite meal...}  We just need a good recipe.  Sooo, last night we looked at my BH&G cook book, the Ball canning guide, the ingredient labels of sauce from the store… and I finally went online and found a few more recipes to consult.  :o  Nothing like keeping it simple.  We tasted often, and we all wept over chopped onions and minced garlic…  Tasting it again today, the Cowgirl decided if we don’t like it on pizza, we could just use it for spaghetti sauce {maybe I added too much sugar to the second batch?}

At any rate, we now have 11.5 pints of pizza/Italian tomato sauce accomplished ~ as well as a lesson in canning.  My shoulder says, ‘Tis Done!

daybook?! 9/29/2014

For today… Monday, September 29, 2014

Outside my window...  Joel W. is combining our soybeans today!  mostly sunny, almost 80F.  {Late last night we had a raging sort of h>u>g>e> ‘bonfire’ in the neighbor’s pasture across the road… crazy}

Hearing... not much besides the fridge.  The kids went out after our late lunch, and I should call them back inside...

Pondering... contentment

Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.  I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.  I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

Praying...

Denise had her last chemo treatment last week.  Today she has scans to see what’s left of the cancer.  She’s hoping for a miracle.  Dan F., another church member, was diagnosed with stage four pancreatic cancer.  He will start chemo soon, but the doctors are not predicting a complete recovery.  They each have a testimony that must please God… trusting in Him, living to glorify Him alone.

Kate & Abby started their 9-week block of classes today – which includes Greek!  :o

Thankful... Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me.

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth
Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide;
Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,
Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!

Creating... another care package, this one for friends in China

Going... to run a few errands in town, soon.

Reading... the mail {bills and pills!  ha ha  -  just like Mrs. Snow}

Looking forward to... learning the destination for next year’s youth mission trip ~ international meal is scheduled for October 18!

In the kitchen... leftover egg rolls and pizza for supper last night, and again for lunch today.  Leftover maid-rite meat might become tacos for supper.  Gotta love leftovers enough to make a meal!

In the learning rooms... I started checking school work this morning.  As well as writing out assignments for October.  As well as plans for history the next several weeks.  And library book requests… [including inter-library loans]  Time consuming teacher stuff.

And the kids?  They have completed nine weeks of Bible class {OT: Kings of Israel} already!  Not sure why they are in such a hurry.  The Popper has a book report to write for English – she read Carry On, Mr. Bowditch, one of my favorite books!  The Cattleman seems to think algebraic equations make sense this year – praise the Lord!  And the Cowgirl is going to soldier thru the abundance of writing assignments included in her English course this year (since I didn’t tell her she could skip any of them) – today she was writing a short play.

Around the house... always something that needs cleaning.  A pile of library books.  The Cattleman and Cowgirl picked tomatoes again! on Saturday before they pulled the plants – so there are several filled buckets waiting in the garage.

The Mother Load... Ironing – ha ha – another perpetual job to be done.  Menu plan for October.  Ideas for celebrating Tim’s 50th??  {which is no big deal to him}

Noticing that... we have much to be thankful for truly.  Even the abundant tomatoes I suppose.

Something fun to share...  Isn’t this cute?

A favorite quote for today...

One of my favorite things... gerbera daisies

September wrap-up {almost}

:::WEEK THREE:::

  • A barn/shed just adds so much to a misty sunrise photo!

001

  • I visited Maggie at her house to cook up a storm for supper, but we kept it calm and just made biscuits.  And then we had to convince Connor to taste and like them.  Silly boy.  {they were perfect!}
  • I finished the August blog posts… yep, mid-September.
  • I have new resolve to purge the basement of a few dinosaurs.  ahem.  Which are still there, and not listed for sale on line. Yet.

011012015

  • Don’t cry over spilt…

017   022

  • Fridays seem to work well as Kitchen {Baking} Day… hence the granola, garden tomatoes to can, pizzas for Denise, bread for us & for my brother.  And brownies of course {hence the cocoa on my floor}

018019023

  • Science experiment day while we’re at it!  Testing the freezing point of various liquids.  Amorphous solids.  Weird, but fun.

:::WEEK FOUR:::

  • Sept 21, Sunday evening:  Good New in the Park.  Complete with someone’s marvelous model of Noah’s Ark.  Sunshine, ice cream and hot dogs.  And a bzillion mosquitos.  Give or take.
  • My mom had promised Daniel a care package with his favorite oatmeal-raisin cookies… she also asked me for some other ideas for him as well as the girls.  We combined a few things together and mailed them off to some really happy college kiddos.
  • I stitched up several baby blankets – I think I actually finished my ‘stash’ of flannel!  Just need some more girl babies to give most of them to…
  • More tomatoes from the garden?!

  • We are having a good year so far with history {my main ‘teaching’ class with the kids}  A variety of books to read aloud.  They WROTE something for their first ThinkWrite – yes!  I found a pile of 1812-ish books at the library for them to peruse {be distracted from other duties}.  And a pretty good YouTube video with Tchaikovsky’s Overture 1812.  Which I am failing to embed, but hopefully the link works!

Napoleon Invasion of Russia

  • You know the saying about the best laid plans of mice and men?  Well, my recent Thursday was a particularly brainless day.  Why? I do not know.  But several miles down the highway, I remembered that I needed identification paperwork for the Cattleman to get his permit.  Ugh.  {We did remember the driver’s ed paperwork for the Cowgirl, but I was hoping for ONE stop at the DOT…}  So, while we skipped the DOT, the Cowgirl did demonstrate her capable driving skills while we went the loooong way to Target.  At least we found a pair of shoes for the Cattleman there.  And they went on to piano lessons in a timely fashion.  While I finished shopping.  And forgot to remind the carry-out guy that I’d paid for softener salt.  {sigh}  Putting it on next week’s list now.  And the receipt back in my purse.
  • Tim - and crew - started combining both soybeans and corn on Friday.  His 15th harvest of this Iowa residency.
  • the Cowgirl finished a sewing project for next month’s wedding {centerpiece décor for the reception}.  And she helped the Popper package her egg rolls for our supper Saturday night.

… and September of 2014 is almost gone!

still in catch-up mode

{{warning… l…o…n…g… post}}

Now that it’s the END of September, and I’ve spent many blogger hours sharing our life that was August…  it must be time to talk about the current month while it’s still sorta current.

Since I have been a bit more active on facebook, I will borrow from my timeline there as well as the beloved wall calendar hanging at my desk.   And the camera of course [gotta love date/time stamps].

:::WEEK ONE:::

  • Tim & the Cattleman spent much of Labor Day outside…

006

007   008

001   003

  • A lovely throw-back to 1968-ish, which my SIL posted on fb ~

1968ish family pic 1094066_10152614765867347_5692027840124441748_o

  • I did get an appointment with my dentist and learned for sure that my crown was still in place.  \o/  What I lost was a major-huge filling in the next tooth.  The good news is that said dentist was amazed to learn how many years ago she’d placed that filling, while promising me I’d be back soon to crown that tooth.  I guess I like a challenge.  But I didn’t argue with her this time, just thanked her for the temp filling that has kept me over-eating for the past several weeks.  I have a 90-minute appointment in another week to prep the tooth for a crown.  [I’m seriously not looking forward to that, which anyone with a small jaw and TMJ-tendencies can understand why. Ninety minutes?!]
  • I shipped a package to Abby with whatever little things the girls left behind (?)  I don’t really remember now, probably in the TMI category anyway.  I also memorized the phone number for a local computer repair guy… who still has Abby’s laptop in his possession. [I finally begged Tim to knock on his door last week since he quit answering the phone – probably has caller ID.  ha ha]  Anyhoo, I guess it should be a matter of prayer, trusting that God will work a minor techno miracle.  And hopefully we have all learned the valuable lesson and won’t need to repeat it.  Um, and hopefully we will get her laptop back before Christmas.
  • We officially started the new SCHOOL year at home.  And piano lessons.  I shipped a smaller package to Daniel since I refused to mail his ceramic mug with the reasoning that he could buy a new one at the college bookstore for less than I could ship his favorite one from home.  [hard hearted?  Don’t worry, my mom will make up for it… just wait and see.]
  • More garden produce.  And the Cowgirl decided to bake a cake {one layer} and make use of the fondant Kate mixed up in May… along with frosting roses from the freezer.  Maybe that was the night Tim & I went out for dinner with friends?  [Ah yes.  fyi, you can use a visa statement for a journal prompt as well]

  • the Cattleman cooked supper ~ Farmhouse BBQ Biscuits.  With extra biscuits for breakfast!

053   056

058  059

060  061

  • the Popper still loves to study science, but literature is her new favorite class.  The joys of junior high.

054

  • And that was just Monday.  On Tuesday, I shipped Kate’s b-day package.  Then Tim’s niece brought her daughter up for a visit {while her hubby was on a tree-trimming job near DesMoines}

001  002

008  010

012

  • The new shed = storage for hay.  And potatoes in the rafters!  {hmm, they must have baled hay during week one?  Oh yes, and the Cattleman missed the first piano lesson because he was raking… and the girls needed to shop fabric.}

003 005

  • Wednesday.  Happiness is… a fresh hair cut.  Then canvassing one-fourth of Cambridge while the chilly wind blows my hair around.  It’s a wild life, folks.

  • Remembering 9/11…

  • Can’t quite believe we have a ‘child’ who is 21 years old!

IMG_1431

  • First frost warning for Saturday, Sept 13 [3-8am].  So I clipped the gerbera blooms before covering the plants.

006

  • Endured unkind knock-knock joke from the Iowa Hawkeye fans.  But enjoyed the fact that the ISU Cyclones won the game anyway!

…stay tuned for the second half of September…
